The answer

Is there a current Home Energy Scotland grant for standard solar PV?

Do not assume there is a current standalone Scottish grant for standard solar PV. Home Energy Scotland distinguishes technologies and its funding table can change. Check the live scheme and your eligibility before treating any amount as part of a solar budget.

Which solar technology does the funding page mean?

Standard solar PV makes electricity. Solar thermal heats water. A hybrid PV/thermal system does both. Home Energy Scotland's current homeowner Grant and Loan table does not list a standalone grant or loan for standard solar PV; it lists loan-only support for solar thermal and eligible hybrid PV/water heating. A social post saying 'solar grants available' may be describing another technology, a different programme or a rule that has changed.

Check the exact product on your quotation against the live funding table, not a generic 'solar' label. If an installer says a scheme will cover it, ask for the scheme name and the specific eligible measure in writing. Home Energy Scotland itself makes the funding decision.

Could another property or scheme have a different route?

Owner-occupiers, private landlords, charities and community organisations do not all use the same scheme. Home Energy Scotland's separate Private Rented Sector Landlord Loan currently lists solar PV only as part of a qualifying package with other measures. CARES can support solar PV for an eligible community building, subject to its heating, core-measure and organisation rules. Neither route turns every Scottish home's rooftop PV into a grant-funded project.

Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are also not an installation grant. They may pay for eligible surplus electricity after the system is operating and a supplier contract is in place. Keep that expected income separate from any finance for the initial purchase.

Decide whether the roof works before relying on funding

A solar survey should check roof condition, orientation, shade, safe access, electrical connection and when you use power. It can show whether the proposed array makes sense with no subsidy, or what amount of approved support would be needed for your budget. A loan still needs repaying and an export rate can change.

For any scheme you might use, record the date you checked the official terms and the point at which a written offer reserves funding. Home Energy Scotland says its Grant and Loan funding is reserved only when it issues a written offer, not on application, and work cannot start before that offer. Do not pay a grant-dependent deposit or start restricted work based on an assumed award.
