Scottish renewable energy funding

What funding could help improve your property?

There is no single renewable energy grant for everyone. The useful starting point is whether the property is your home, a business site or a community building. Compare the live schemes below, then ask FLO for a free survey if you want to see what work is possible.

Which Scottish funding route fits your property?

These schemes support different people, organisations and types of work. Start with the one that describes you.

Your home

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

Up to £7,500

heat-pump grant, with an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. A £1,500 grant uplift may apply to eligible rural or island homes.

Who it is for
You own and live in an existing Scottish home as your only or main private residence.
What it can cover
A qualifying whole-home heat pump and selected energy-efficiency work, including some insulation measures.
Check before you commit
There is no standard grant for standalone solar PV. Speak to Home Energy Scotland for advice and an application referral. Do not start the funded work before a written offer.
Your business

Business Energy Scotland SME Loan

£1k–£130k

interest-free loan. Eligible efficiency work may receive 75% cashback up to £20,000; qualifying renewable heat may receive 75% up to £10,000. Cashback needs a loan.

Who it is for
Scottish SMEs, charities and not-for-profits may qualify. Businesses generally need at least 12 months trading; private-sector landlords are excluded.
What it can cover
Measures recommended in a qualifying Business Energy Scotland report, such as heat pumps, heating controls, insulation or lighting.
Check before you commit
The scheme is not taking new solar PV applications. Get the Business Energy Scotland report before applying; do not pay a deposit or start work before a written loan offer.
Your community building

CARES Community Buildings Fund

Up to £80,000

grant for up to 80% of eligible costs. Your organisation must find at least 20% match funding.

Who it is for
A Scottish charity or non-profit company improving a regularly used community building it owns or holds on a qualifying long-term lease.
What it can cover
Eligible heat pumps, solar PV or solar water heating, with some insulation and storage as add-ons. The project must meet the fund’s heating requirement and include a core measure.
Check before you commit
CARES asks for evidence of building use and ownership or lease, a year of energy bills and a quote. Local Energy Scotland decides eligibility and any award.

Scheme details checked 4 October 2026. Amounts, availability and eligibility can change; the funder makes the final decision.

A common funding question

Can I get a grant for solar panels?

It depends on the property. A solar quote is not the same as a funding offer.

At home

The standard Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan does not offer a standalone solar PV grant. Its main grant route is for eligible clean heating and energy-efficiency work.

At a business

The SME Loan Scheme is not accepting new solar PV applications. You can still ask FLO to survey your site and price solar separately from any eligible efficiency or heating work.

At a community building

CARES can fund solar PV, but the building must also meet the fund’s heating requirement and the project must include an eligible core measure.

Ask FLO what could work at my property

Before you apply

What will you need to get together?

A free FLO survey can establish what may work at your property and help you get a technical quote. Each fund also asks for its own evidence:

Home

  • Home Energy Scotland advice and application referral
  • An itemised installer quote
  • An EPC recommending the measure if you seek energy-efficiency funding

Business

  • A qualifying Business Energy Scotland report naming the work
  • A quote that matches the recommended measures
  • Business and financial details the loan administrator requests

CARES

  • Proof you own the building or hold a qualifying lease
  • A year of energy bills, building-use details and photos
  • A technical quote and a plan for your 20% match

Do not treat FLO’s survey as a funding approval. Home Energy Scotland supplies the home application referral, Business Energy Scotland supplies the qualifying SME report, and Local Energy Scotland assesses CARES. FLO can survey, design and quote for the work; each funder confirms the rules and decides on funding.
