The answer
What is the difference between import and export capacity?
Import capacity is the power the site can draw from the grid; export capacity concerns power it can send back. Heat pumps and EV charging increase import demand, while solar can create export. Batteries can affect both depending on how they are operated.

Why a single connection matters
The service fuse, distribution boards and network agreement were sized for a particular use. Adding several technologies separately can exceed a local limit or require control, upgrades or an application. Look at measured maximum demand, not just annual electricity use, and include planned future equipment.

Make network timing part of the plan
Ask an electrical designer or installer to identify the applicable distribution-network process for each proposed technology and who will submit it. An export limit can change a solar business case; import constraints can change heating or charging plans. Check these before promising an installation date or fixed financial return.
