The answer
Can you tell whether a roof suits solar panels from a photo?
A photograph can reveal roof direction and obvious shade, but it cannot tell you whether the covering and structure are ready for panels. A useful solar survey checks roof life, fixing method, shade through the year, safe installation access, the electrical route and whether the space left after obstacles is worth using.

Will the roof need replacing soon?
Panels are intended to stay in place for years. If the slates, tiles or membrane are near the end of their life, the later removal and reinstatement bill can change the project's economics. Ask when the roof was last repaired, whether the covering has a warranty and who will judge its remaining life. Repair work before installation may be less disruptive than lifting a finished array later.

Can the roof safely hold the panels?
The structure and fixing method must suit the roof in front of you, including wind exposure and any unusual construction. A standard mounting drawing does not establish that old timbers or a lightweight commercial roof will carry the proposed array. Chimneys, rooflights, vents and setbacks also reduce usable area; a panel count based on the roof's outer dimensions may be unrealistic. Ask for a dimensioned layout and any structural question to be resolved before a firm quote.
03 / 03
Can people install and maintain it safely?
The design needs a way onto the roof, access for future repairs and a practical path for cables to an inverter and electrical board. Keep gutters, roof windows and other plant reachable. Check whether scaffolding, a cherry picker or other access cost is included. A shaded but easy-looking roof can still be poor value, so the generation estimate should state what shade allowance was used and how it changes through the year.
What should be checked on the roof itself?
Ask for a roof plan with the panel positions, rooflights, chimneys, vents and edge clearances drawn in. A clear picture makes the proposed capacity testable. If two quotes fit different numbers of panels, find out whether one ignored an obstruction or allowed less space for maintenance.
Ask which parts of the roof assessment are visual and which still require a roofer or structural professional. A free early survey can establish whether the site is promising without pretending to sign off hidden timber condition. The final price should say who owns each unresolved check and what a failed check would change.
Treat roof repairs, scaffolding, inverter location, cable route and network paperwork as part of the project, not awkward extras discovered after signing. A roof that looks sunny can be a good candidate and still need preparatory work; the useful answer is whether that work is worth doing for this property.
