The answer

How can your group tell whether a CARES quote is complete?

A useful quote tells you what equipment you are buying, why that size was chosen, all the work included, what costs extra and when the job can be finished. It should also provide the information CARES asks for.

01 / 03

Can you see every major cost?

Ask for separate prices for each system and for scaffolding, radiators, a hot-water cylinder, electrical changes and repairs after installation. That makes missing work easier to spot.

02 / 03

Why was this equipment chosen?

For a heat pump, the quote should relate to your building's heat needs and radiators. For solar, it should explain the roof and expected generation. For a battery, it should show what power it would store and when you would use it.

03 / 03

When can the work be finished?

The quote should say which checks and permissions are still needed, who will arrange them and how long equipment and installation may take. Leave time for testing and the documents needed to claim the grant.

A useful quote explains the project, not just the equipment

Ask your chosen installer to explain what the system will heat or power, how it was sized, which equipment and building work are included, and what is left out. For a heat pump, that may mean radiators and hot water; for solar, roof access and the electrical connection. Your committee and Local Energy Scotland need to see what the price actually covers.

Use Local Energy Scotland's current guidance on quotations. If the installer has not checked something yet, the quote should say what remains to be checked and whether it could change the price or timing.

What to check next

Your next steps

Ask for separate prices for each system and any extra building or electrical work
Check that the quote names the equipment, its size and what it is expected to do
Ask who handles permissions, the electricity network and anything not included
Check the installation dates, final testing, handover and documents needed for the grant claim
