The answer

Is air-to-air heating the same as an air-to-water heat pump?

Reversible air conditioning is an air-to-air heat pump: it can heat and cool rooms, but it does not normally supply radiators or domestic hot water. It can suit particular spaces, yet a whole-home heating plan must account for every room and hot water separately.

What does an air-to-air system heat?

An outdoor unit moves heat to indoor units that warm the air in the rooms they serve. Most reversible models can also cool those rooms in summer. Energy Saving Trust points to smaller homes and flats as places where this can be useful, particularly when an air-to-water system and new wet heating circuit are impractical.

An indoor unit does not heat a closed bedroom just because it warms the hall. Draw the rooms and doors, identify where people need comfort and decide how many indoor units or other heaters are needed. A system designed for one home office is a different purchase from replacing heating throughout a house. Indoor airflow, noise at a bed or desk and the outdoor-unit position all belong in the layout.

What will provide hot water and fresh air?

Most air-to-air heat pumps do not heat water for taps and showers. Keep the existing hot-water system or design another one, then include its cost and electricity use when comparing options. Energy Saving Trust notes there are some exceptions and alternatives, so ask what the particular model actually does rather than relying on a broad technology label.

A wall-mounted indoor unit normally recirculates room air; it is not a fresh-air ventilation system. Opening windows or a separate ventilation arrangement still matters. If cooling is the reason for the project, consider shading and ventilation first where practical, then size cooling for the remaining load.

Can it replace your present heating?

Ask how much heat the selected unit can deliver at the cold outdoor temperature used for the property design, then check whether every occupied room can receive enough. The existing boiler or electric heaters may remain for unserved spaces; that changes both the carbon and bill comparison. A brochure efficiency figure at one test point is not a seasonal running-cost forecast.

The free survey should map rooms, hot-water demand, indoor and outdoor positions and the electrical route. You should leave knowing whether air-to-air is a whole-property option, a targeted comfort solution or an addition to another heating system.
